Some cynical fellow out there has argued that all conversation between people is nothing but power play, with one interlocutor necessarily dominating the other even if the subject of discussion is as inconsequential as what one of them had for breakfast.

We stayed in Father Vadim’s house for several days, before and after little Vasily’s christening, and I was able to observe firsthand what a force of nature a good popadya, or matushka, or priest’s wife, becomes when pushed to extremes.

The streets here are a kind of itinerant art museum, where in a single day one sees quite a few Parmigianinos, Pollaiuolos, and Ghirlanaios. How else? Their ancestors, bakers’ daughters or admirals’ wives, probably sat for all those portraits.
