Richard II is a drama of the overthrow of the legitimate king of England by Henry Bolingbroke, but the drama is so confusing to progressives that they have developed a cynical reading of Shakespeare to account for his apparent sympathy for the murdered king. In fact, Shakespeare’s royalism and concern for legitimacy is a much better explanation for the content of the play, which portrays the assault on Richard’s crown in sacrilegious terms.
