England’s unusual relation to the papacy was a topic of special concern in Elizabethan times, and these historical problems appear in Shakespeare’s history plays. This theme was of especial importance to Queen Elizabeth’s regime, which was asserting a new Protestant particularism, and the interactions of kings with papal bulls and the will of Rome were of special interests.
