Fr. Barbour’s lecture ultimately addresses the essential need for artistically beautiful prayers because reason cannot encompass, yet must accept truths about God, and poetic beauty is our path to this transcendence. Shakespeare was part of a medieval mystic tradition of affirmation without argument. This has made Shakespeare famously difficult to identify as a Protestant, a Church Papist, or otherwise, but yet undeniably a Christian believer. The Bard is an example to us of contentment with inheritance without the urge of fundamental criticism and analysis that so characterizes modernity.
