Boethius Book Club, Episode 10: The Odyssey

By

This month’s selection is The Odyssey. Our first discussion one year ago, you will recall, took up the books devoted to Telemachus. The discussion was quite good but limited. Although everyone probably has read the Odyssey more than once, and I know that many reread the whole thing for last August’s meeting, we shall be concentrating mainly on the opening of Book I, Books V-VIII, XI, and XIII-XXIV. In this next installment, we shall take up the character and homecoming of Odysseus and explore more deeply the Homeric view of man, the gods, and justice. We might even engage in...

Anthony Trollope on Sermons

By

This is Trollope’s musings on the sermon preached by the odious Mr. Slope in Barchester Cathedral: There is, perhaps, no greater hardship at present inflicted on mankind in civilized and free countries than the necessity of listening to sermons. No one but a preaching clergyman has, in these realms, the power of compelling an audience to sit silent and be tormented. No one but a preaching clergyman can revel in platitudes, truisms, and untruisms, and yet receive, as his undisputed privilege, the same respectful demeanour as though words of impassioned eloquence, or persuasive logic, fell from his lips. Let a...

Nikos Doukas: Trump’s victory and Europe

By

Trump’s victory came as a surprise in Europe, far more than in the US.  The major TV channels for months presented him as paranoid.  In a country like Greece, plagued by illegal immigration and targeted for centuries by Islamic expansionism, Trump’s views on these issues were presented as eccentric and extreme. Any discussion on the US elections ended with the conclusion that Trump will be crushed in the ballot and the World will continue its course towards the “progressive paradise.”   Particularly perverse was the spectacle of  leftist Greek (in other words White Christian) political analysts gleefully reveling in the crush that awaits...

Christopher Check, “Happy to Lose the Bet”

By

Sometime late last Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, I lost 100 dollars. In September, at a fundraising banquet for Saint Michael’s Abbey, well fueled by a couple of gin-and-tonics, I bet a delightful lady named Bernadette that Hilary would win the election. She backed Trump. The loser would pay 100 dollars to the Abbey. Never have I been so happy to lose a bet. (I hope the confreres spend it on gin.) The anguished looks on the sanctimonious visages of Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow were worth every single penny. Watching the map grow redder as the evening wore...
