In 1935 there appeared, to no great acclaim, a book of essays whose title asks a question that is still of vital importance to the dwindling remnant of Americans and Europeans who wish to think for themselves: Who Owns America?
The other night, at a dinner party, our host asked the guests to recount the oddest experience they had ever had, and I told the story of how I obtained my residence permit. It was a document I did not need because, as a British subject and hence an EC national, I was as legally entitled to live here as any Italian citizen.

As America goes through another paroxysm of Supreme Court mania since the death of Ruth Abortion Ginsburg, I though I’d advance a reform of the court I don’t think anyone else has devised: Make the court comprised of the chief justices of the 50 states. So the court would expand from nine to 50. And it would meet for one month every two years.
