A Letter to the Editor from The Alabamian

Tonight, I went to a political campaign event where  state and local candidates or their representatives were meeting the public in my county.  I spoke to a gubernatorial candidate, and a representative for another at the event, both Republican.  I asked very superficial questions about how these two candidates felt about Southern heritage.

The night of May 13, 1862, some Confederate officers did not pay sufficient attention to a well loaded gun ship, the C.S.S. Planter. Very early the next morning, Robert Smalls and his accomplices seized the Planter loaded ammunition and weapons, and slipped past Confederate checkpoints out of Charleston Harbor and into the Union ships blockading the city.
