Thomas Fleming: All Gone in Search of America

What does it mean to be an American? Major debates over legislation and proposed constitutional amendments raise the question. Without stretching a point too much, it is easy to see the American identity as the underlying question on the immigration issue, the Equal Rights Amendment, and perhaps even in the debate over abortion. It comes out very clear in discussion of the English Language Amendment sponsored last year by Senator Huddleston of Kentucky and supported by U.S. English, a group headed by former Senator and linguist S.I. Hayakawa. The amendment would make explicit a fact of life obvious to anyone that...

Three Cheers for the Electoral College!

I’m gloating over how the Electoral College worked as it’s supposed to, as designed by the Founding Fathers: It kept California from being relevant. Was California in 1787-89 part of Spain? No matter. The Founders had a dream in Philadelphia and saw how disastrous this state would become. Leftists of all stripes now are screaming, as they did in 2000, about how the EC is “undemocratic.” Screeched a letter to the Washington Post, “The Electoral College, an undemocratic vestige, distorted the election by giving battleground state voters more weight and smaller states disproportionate representation.” Thank you for making my...

Momentum

Three recent pieces, two from America and one Italian, cite the work of the humble president of this little organization, in other words me. The first American–in the geographical sense–piece is by Peter Brimelow on his highly esteemed website VDare: http://www.vdare.com/articles/the-american-conservative-movement-has-ended-the-american-right-goes-on                                                                                                                      ...

Wednesday’s Child: America vs. America

The verdict in the case of America vs. America, heard yesterday in the divorce court of public opinion, had not yet been handed down when I filed my column.  Besides, my views on the feuding spouses have been voiced sufficiently in this space to remove any suspicion in the reader’s mind that I’m partial to one or the other.  The man is a vulgarian, a brute, an oaf; the woman, a shrew, a liar, a hypocrite; and, indeed, for a while it looked to me like they were made for one another, a perfect couple, but then suddenly, bang!  Divorce....

The Sweet Smell of Victory

To quote the late Jackie Gleason: How sweet it is! How for months did I correctly predict a Trump victory, including right here on this site? Because, although I now live in California, I grew up near Detroit. I keep in touch with friends and relatives back there. They’re what Trump called the “forgotten Americans.” The bum trade deals – which aren’t “free” trade, but “managed” trade – hurt them, especially NAFTA and TPP. Meanwhile, just about everybody else was getting special government benefits paid for by the real producers. Not just Elon Musk’s Tesla, which wouldn’t exist without massive subsidies,...

Election Night and the Day After

My wife and I went to the Eastons at 6, to eat American chili, drink wine, and watch  to the election returns.  Betsy Easton is absolutely confident of a Trump victory, Gail Fleming refuses to believe that anything so wonderful could happen, Jim and I agree that it is possible, if rumors of a big turn-out among old-fashioned Americans prove true.  I take heart from the wacky conservative websites I have looked at, where people are bragging not only about voting for the first time in years but also claim to have dragged  friends and family to the polls. So far at...

Fed Up: Why Trump Will Win

“Barnes was at the eye of our rage – and through him, our Captain Ahab – we would set things right again. That day we loved him.” – Chris in the Movie “Platoon.” “I’m fed up,” a friend told me last Sunday after church about why she’s voting for Donald Trump. That sums up the election for me. It’s why I’ve been saying for months that Trump will win big. Americans are fed up with: idiot foreign wars, political correctness, crony capitalism, the Clintons, the Bushes, economic stagnation, moral putrescence, repressive leftist professors, the Main Sleaze Media, “Pay to Play” politics, the Clinton Foundation,...

Wednesday’s Child:  This Way Up (1)

A provincial painter of eclectic pictures, of the sort immortalised by Saki under the title “Dying Hyenas in Trafalgar Square,” wrote in to a Sunday newspaper recently to announce his resignation from the world of art.  There was no critical milieu in Britain, he lamented, sensitive enough to save him from oblivion.  “No matter what I paint, or how good or bad my works are,” he wrote in his letter, “no newspaper, magazine or gallery has shown the slightest interest.” “I am not saying that I am right and they are wrong,” the gentle creature from Stonebroom, near Alfreton, Derbyshire,...

Jail Hillary to Prevent More Security Breaches

Back in my infancy I joined the U.S. Army, 1978-82, and became a Russian linguist in the National Security Agency for the last three years of that, stationed in West Germany. During boot camp and while learning Russian for a year at the Defense Language Institute in idyllic Monterey, Calif., the FBI performed a background check on me, interviewing family, friends and neighbors back in Michigan. They wanted to make sure I wasn’t a Soviet agent. I was given a Top Secret security clearance with Special Intelligence Access. I then received two months of cryptographic training at Goodfellow Air Force...
